On camera flash is the worst possible light to define muscle tone. A 5 degree grid spot to fill and evenly light the eyes and face works nicely. For legs placing degree gridded lights from the side works best. It avoids light from spilling onto the abs and upper body and filling in the shadows produced from overhead light source.

To preserve your physique in its best light, read on. The number one thing a bodybuilder needs to focus on is becoming as lean as possible prior to the shoot. The camera creates an illusion. Are there any tricks to enhance that lean look for the camera?
There aren't any tricks, but what a bodybuilder needs to always keep in mind is everyone has certain positions they look better in. That is my best angle. I feel that I don't look as good straight on. My waist looks narrower to the side than it is head on.
The best thing to do is practice some poses in the mirror to see your best angles. Remember, its all about presentation. Image is everything. Should an athlete have photos taken before the contest or after the contest? What time of day would be best? Good question. I have done shoots right before a show, the day of a show and one month before a show. But the best time to shoot is after a show, like a week or two after.
Here's why, if you shoot before a contest, your face is a bit depleted and your vascularity isn't at its peak. You can have some carbs before the shoot, or simple sugars to get some veins out but the bottom line is its not going to do much good. There should be a coach at the session who knows all the different poses, and who will help the bodybuilder achieve the right looks without making mistakes in posing. He will also assist the bodybuilder in warm-up exercises that make him look his best. Generally, you want to oil their body -- baby oil works well, PAM works better.
Be prepared to clean up overspray, footprints, and drips in the studio after the session. In terms of lighting, I generally think it's best to keep it relatively simple. I generally shoot on black seamless, with the subject about 8 feet away from the paper. I like hard main and fill lights -- big silver umbrellas are good for this. Ideal are two stripboxes behind and off to the side of the suibject.
If you don't have stripboxes, two flashes stacked per side with small umbrellas are OK, or even just a standard 7" reflector direct. If you use only one flash per side, you will have a hard time getting a nice even rimlight all over the body. Watch out for flare and contrast degradation, especially with older zooms. You may have to compromise on the position of the back lights to get the best look with the least flare. Understand that this is hard workfor the bodybuilder -- get everything set up and then work fast.
As the session goes on, sweating may become profuse, which is either a problem or a gift, depending on what you are going for. To sanity check your work, I would pick up a couple bodybuilding magazines. If your work looks pretty much like what is in the magazines, chances are, you have done the right stuff.
